新たな陶酔をもたらす“テクノ×エレクトロ”
Don Williamsと言えば、ここ日本ではモダンなディープハウスの佳曲を多数発表してきたレーベル〈Mojuba Records〉の運営者としてのイメージが強いかもしれない。ただし、それはDon Williamsの多彩な音楽性の一要素に過ぎない。今回のパーティでは、Don Williamsが手がけるもうひとつのレーベル〈a.r.t.less〉に焦点を当てることで、テクノやエレクトロのクラシックな要素をモダンに提示して新旧の音楽ファンの心を捉えてきた彼の違う一面に迫る。
浮遊感のあるエレクトロから硬質なハードテクノまで幅広く手掛けていた名レーベル〈Pure Plastic〉からDon Williamsが00年代前半に作品を発表していたことは、〈a.r.t.less〉への布石だったと言えるだろう。デトロイトのSF的未来感覚をダンスの肉体性に結び付ける〈a.r.t.less〉の洗練されたサウンドは、Don Williamsの昨今のDJセットに通じるものだ。この夜も、クラシックとモダンの両面からハウスやテクノをミックスし、感情と身体を揺さぶる濃厚なムードでStudio Xを満たしてくれるだろう。
Don Williamsの運営するレーベルから複数の名義で作品をリリースしてきたKen Sumitaniも、ここ数年はとくにテクノへの接近が著しい。セルフレーベルそしてプロジェクト名であるWaveguideでは、STEREOCiTIとしての活動のイメージを大きく覆す、ボトムの効いた疾走感とムードにあふれるモダンなテクノサウンドを展開している。〈a.r.t.less〉から発表した「Quod EP」は、ダブテクノやエレクトロのエッセンスをしっかりと感じさせながら陶酔性を深く強化した意欲的な内容で周囲を驚かせた。
この夜は、ひとつのスタイルだけに捉われず、貪欲に自らの音楽を追求するふたりの“今”を体験する格好の機会となるだろう。活動を長年共にしながら互いの音楽性を理解しあったふたりが作り上げる一夜には、抗いようのないほどの没頭空間を期待したい。
New and intoxicating “techno x electro”
Don Williams may be best known in Japan as the founder of Mojuba Records which has released multiple modern deep house, but his musical vision ranges far beyond. This night will focus more on classic techno and electro with a modern twist that is the base of his other label a.r.t.less.
The road to his label a.r.t.less could have began to take shape with Don’s release in early 2000’s from Pure Plastic, a label infamous sounds that ranges from drifty electro and hard banging techno. The futuristic sci-fi sounds of Detroit can be said to be the the sound of a.r.t.less, which is amplified in Don William’s recent DJ set. This night in Studio X will also be another example of the wide spectrum ranging from classic to modern, house to techno, and beyond.
Ken Sumitani, known as STEREOCiTI and has releases on Don Williams’ label with different aliases, will be performing as his project/label Waveguide. His outstanding release on a.r.t.less『Quod EP』keeps the essence of dub techno and electro while exploring deeper realms.
This night, without being restricted to one specific style, will represent the “present” by two acts that have been affiliated for many years.
